Stories of Tursi

The town I carry in my heart

«When I see something, I can’t pretend I haven’t. And in Tursi I saw a town with a great story to tell.»

Luigi Laita · myTursi

I was born and raised in Germany. That is where I lived, worked and became who I am. But my heart has always beaten for Tursi.

As a child I came here every summer with my family. Those holidays were the best time of the year: friends, my father’s whole family, days that never seemed to end.

In the early nineties we moved here. We thought it would be forever; it turned out to be three years. My father opened a small electrical appliance shop, «Il Satellite»: televisions, washing machines, fridges, cookers. Maybe someone still remembers it. I went to school here, and those three years left a deep mark on me: the way of life, the generosity, the kindness of the people. I have carried them inside me all my life.

Luigi Laita in the alleys of Tursi’s old town

As an adult, every time the first warm days arrived in Germany, I was overcome with longing. The sea, the beach, those real summers, hot and full, that simply don’t exist up there. Tursi always called me back.

Three years ago that voice became a decision: to return to Italy, to my town, where my roots are. And with the path I have travelled, in life and in work, I realised that I can give Tursi something precious.

Over these three years I have experienced Tursi with new eyes. I tried to understand what matters to people, where a helping hand is needed and above all how much potential this town has. It has a great deal, even some it may not know it has. That is how myTursi was born, a portal I dedicate to my town because it deserves it. And because Tursi has strong, capable and precious people who, together, can take it to a level never seen before.

While I was presenting the portal to the businesses in town, I found a welcoming atmosphere full of trust, especially among the younger ones. And it wasn’t only me giving hope: they gave it back to me. They made me feel that what I have sown can truly bear fruit, if we help one another and give Tursi a calling card even more beautiful than the one it already has.

I always look at the good side of things and of people. I believe I was born to help ideas, businesses and people grow, and I never tire: I have a perseverance that keeps me going even where others stop. The path I have taken in Germany, which still continues, confirms it to me every day.

That is why I dedicate myTursi to my town, with devotion and with love for this land. I would like the whole world to see Tursi through my eyes.

I am proud to be from Tursi. And I am proud of all the people who believe in it, who walk with me and support me on this path. I got things started, but alone you can do little. If there are many of us, the world will hear us, see us and in the end will want to come and visit. Because Tursi has a great story to tell.

So come on, let’s go: let’s roll up our sleeves and let Tursi take flight. Just like in our fields: we sow together, and together we harvest.

Warm regards,
Luigi
